Dilema... Dilema... ?? ??? ????

My dear teammates,

For about 6 mo. I have a small quantity of my jewels at a newly opened nail & electrolysis place. The place is open on demand, maybe 2 days a week and the owner is still working for someone else.  Last week I went there to talk to the owner about the feedback she gets from her clients on my jewels. Here is what she said, quote: "People want bling. I went to New York and to Chinatown. I brought back bling bangle bracelets. Three days later they were all gone. I sold them for $25. Too bad I did not bring more."

I explained to her that I do not make that style of jewelry, which she knew what I made as I showed my work to her when we first met.

Now, I need your opinion.

1. Should I just get out of there since this is not my target market?
OR
2. Should I start making bling?

I like bling sometimes! I just do not make bling.
I believe I know what I want to do but it would be great to hear your thoughts.

Thanks a lot for your input.

  1. I wouldn't change! You have your own personal style and niche. I mean I love what you make but it isn't my personal niche. You need to stay true to you and find another venue. I am sure there are plenty of other options around for you. Don't settle!!!

That is my opinion. And even if you did make BLING she wants CHEAP bling, from chinatown!!! So don't do it.

  2. No way you should make Chinatown bling. This is not the spot for you. Make bling when you feel like it in the manner you want and price it accordingly.

Made in China? I don't think so!

  3. It doesn't sounds to me like she recognizes the value of your quality handmade jewelry versus the mass produced cheap chinatown jewelry. I would stay true to what you ar passionate about making and find a venue that is better suited to your niche.

  4. Stay true to yourself. It sounds as though that is just not the right venue for you.

  5. Stay true to yourself. I've been through the same thing trying to please different people and straying from the style that I originally set out to do. I found it best to stay with my own niche and target the customers that appreciated it.

  6. Is she asking you to leave? Are you paying for the space? Have you sold anything? I'd stay for a bit to see if anything sells. I wouldn't start making a different style unless you enjoy doing that.

  7. Your work is so pretty and means something to you. You may consider keeping a few pieces there, but finding a more suitable venue. Her "bling" and your bling ideas may be different.

  8. Yes, I agree . You shouldn't change what you do especially not try to compete with cheap chinese mass produced items.anitanirma - comfyheaven.blogspot.com/

  9. Inessa,
You shouldn't change just for the mere sake of it. just B you! Your style is what you do and what you take pride in, and you have a target market of your own. Bling is great, bling is cool - but you don't need to make bling just to please a nail place. I like your bracelet way better than the bling one. =)

  11. Don't ever stop making your style... but... why not try making some bling? Not cheap bling but bling your way... bling with your style? Does that make sense? I'm all for trying new things and if you try adding a little bling, you may find a new style of your own. There are many times when I design something that is not my style. I have to design what people want and sometimes I really dislike it but sometimes I learn something new... something I can apply to my style and make it even better than before. So keep on making your signature style but play around with it too. You never know what you might come up with.

  12. I'd say stick with your style...what is you. I agree with Kel...if you can add a little bling to your style, do it. If not, be you!

  13. Stick with YOUR style! If she doesn't appreciate the beauty and quality of your items then I would find someplace where they are appreciated. I'm sure there are plenty of other places that would be glad to have your beautiful jewelry. Maybe someplace with a more set schedule?

I like bling...obviously...but I don't like cheap bling and it sounds like cheap chinatown bling is what she's looking for.

  15. If it were me, I would pull my items out of there. Definitely not your clientele. Try something more higher end, like a day spa or upscale gym. I wouldn't change your style, it says who you are.

  16. If it's just not what you do, then you shouldn't make yourself do it!

  17. uniquecozytreasues- You have a great style. Stick with it.

  18. If it's not your style, then I wouldn't do it. Crafting is about making something you love, and sharing that love with someone else. Otherwise, you're just doing it to make money, and although that puts food on the table, you're comprising who you are.

  19. Be yourself and do what you love to do. I hope you find the right place who will love and appreciate your work.

  20. You do what you do because you enjoy it and it is you! If it is not your style you will not be happy doing it.

  21. I think your best option would be to find your target market. If you dont love what you do, it will show. But, you can try bling on for size, no one said we have to keep with the same style forever!!! I like small delicate timeless jewelry, and thats what I make. However, in my line of rings, I have branched out, and I love them.

So I guess my answer is, find a new market, and give bling a try. You may love it. But I definately sugest taking your stuff out of that shop. Its a waste of your products.
